Young farmer and agriculture student Georgia Brown knew precisely what she wanted to do when she left school.

Raised on a farm in Belper, Georgia enrolled on the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Agriculture Management at Broomfield Hall within hours of collecting her GCSE results.

Now 20, she is in the third year of a four-year degree at Harper Adams University and thoroughly enjoying her year鈥檚 placement with livestock feeds manufacturer GLW Feeds Ltd.

Georgia said: 鈥淚 absolutely love my placement, and uni, and it鈥檚 Derby College Group that got me there. I wouldn鈥檛 have got into Harper Adams without Broomfield.

“Obviously coming from a farming family, I already had聽 the basics, but college gave me the building blocks. Broomfield is a lovely campus and a nice place to learn and I especially enjoyed the livestock side.

“College also helped me a lot socially too. There aren鈥檛 many people my age in farming where I live but at Broomfield, I met other young farmers and formed lasting friendships.

“Now there鈥檚 always someone to talk to and go out with, which is really good.鈥�

Georgia is currently a Ruminant Technical & Sales Assistant with GLW based in Shepshed and is considering a career in animal feeds when she graduates.

She said: 鈥淲e learn about nutrition at uni and this placement allows me to use that knowledge practically. I can also relate what I do at GLW back to having our own sheep at home, not just by reading it all in a book.

鈥淚 enjoy dealing with the customers, many of whom are farmers looking for dietary suggestions for their livestock. It helps too that I鈥檓 from a farming background and understand the challenges farmers face.鈥�

GLW turns 150 this year, and to mark this milestone, its directors embarked on a tuk-tuk challenge raising 拢20,000 for charity 鈥� the route for which Georgia helped to plan.

She and four colleagues also contributed 拢1000 to the new 拢30,000 target by completing the Yorkshire Three Peaks.

A strong advocate of encouraging younger generations into land-based careers, Georgia was also featured recently in the Farmers Guardian.

And the Brown family鈥檚 links with Broomfield are set to continue with her younger brother Luke currently on an apprenticeship at Derby College.
