Award – Land Based Studies in Animal Care – Level 1

Course Information for Students

If you have a strong interest in caring for animals, this course will stand you in good stead for a rewarding career.  You will get involved in handling, feeding and watering animals, preparing and maintaining animal accommodation and ensuring the health and welfare of animals.

You should have grade 1 in English and Maths – or the equivalent – and a sound interest in the area of study. All applicants will be interviewed and will undertake an initial assessment in English and maths.

You will learn about animals in the wild and society, while developing your literacy, IT and numeracy.  You will work practically with a wide variety of animals on our animal unit.

Mandatory modules and units will be discussed with you at your interview.

This course will be delivered on-site at Broomfield Hall.

You will be required to supply your own:


鈥erby College Group Green Lab coat
鈥losed-toe flat steel toe-capped shoes/boots/wellingtons
鈥erby College Group polo and sweatshirt
鈥riting materials

Information on where to buy these will be given at enrolment.

Long hair is to be tied back and no nail varnish, false nails, ripped clothing, fake eyelashes or jewellery should be worn whilst on practical lessons.

You will be required to compile a portfolio of evidence reflecting your achievements throughout the course, including written assignments and practical assessments, and to take an online multiple choice test towards the end of the course.

Further Study

If you do well on this course, it may be possible to progress to a Level 2 Diploma or Level 2 Certificate.   You must have a minimum of a Merit grade to advance to the Level 2 Diploma and a Pass grade to progress to the Level 2 Certificate.

This course can help you progress to a traineeship, apprenticeship or employment in the animal industry.
